A leadership shortage is one of the biggest barriers to growth at companies around the world. In fact, according to a report by Deloitte, developing new leaders is the No.1 talent challenge facing organisations, with 86% of companies rating developing new leaders as “urgent” or “important.” However, most companies do not address the most fundamental questions around leadership and talent development, despite huge investment —$40 billion annually according to Boston Consulting Group.

Leadership and talent management capabilities have a surprisingly strong correlation with financial performance. Companies that rated themselves strongest on BCG’s 20 leadership and talent management capabilities increased their revenues 2.2 times faster and their profits 1.5 times faster than those companies that rated themselves the weakest. Despite this, only 14% of companies surveyed by Deloitte said they do an excellent job at developing global leaders.  This state of affairs conflicts with what employees say is important: opportunities to develop their own leadership skills is the No.1 reason for staying with their organisation.
