{"id":4855,"date":"2021-07-21T16:56:03","date_gmt":"2021-07-21T16:56:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tpcleadership.com\/tr-tr\/uncategorized\/using-technology-remotely\/"},"modified":"2025-04-21T18:39:40","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T17:39:40","slug":"using-technology-remotely","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tpcleadership.com\/tr-tr\/liderler-gelistirmek\/using-technology-remotely\/","title":{"rendered":"The best use of technology in a remote setting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While technology has stepped up to keep us connected through the pandemic, we mustn\u2019t let it override basic expectations for human interaction \u2014 as the prolonged period of remote working continues, too many of us are becoming \u2018Zoomed out\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Get the most out of technology and virtual teams<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s important that even when we connect via technology, we connect as humans,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TPC Leadership Netherlands Associate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jacco-levits-0944883\/\">Jacco Levits<\/a>. To get the best out of virtual teams, you need to agree and establish a framework for expectations, both as a team and as a wider organisation. \u201cIf a behaviour is considered rude when meeting in person, it\u2019s also rude via technology.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basic expectations for virtual meetings should include being on time, having mobile phones switched off, everyone keeping their camera on and making eye contact by looking at the camera, especially if you work with multiple screens. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/catherinebardwell\/\">Catherine Bardwell<\/a>, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TPC Leadership UK Associate Partner, says that \u201cwithout the camera, you loose all those human cues <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 body language, facial expressions \u2014 that help people understand each other and build relationships.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technology is always developing. Every few weeks updates are available that allow us to try new things \u2014 break-out rooms in Zoom, for example \u2014 so it\u2019s important to keep abreast of those developments, explains Jacco, ensuring you and your teams regularly go into settings and run available updates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catherine <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends varying the way you use technology.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be creative and spontaneous to prevent interactions becoming stagnant,\u201d she says. \u201cHold virtual meetings while people walk in nature or switch to a phone call for a change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Test your tech<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always test your technology 24 hours in advance of meetings and have a contingency plan in place, should you find the platform isn\u2019t working or your Wi-Fi won\u2019t connect. Check your settings to ensure your camera works and is positioned appropriately and that your microphone and speakers are functioning. Jacco suggests that \u201cyou may find your sound is clearer without a headset, so it\u2019s worth checking to find out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catherine\u2019s tips for using your camera efficiently are to adapt your lighting so that your face can be seen clearly and ensure your background is neat and appropriate \u2014 flowers or books can be effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Will we go back to pre-pandemic ways of working?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our massive move to remote working has challenged the norms of the way we work. \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t forget that working from an office 9-5, five days a week are conventions that came out of the Industrial Revolution and carried over into service economies,\u201d explains Jacco. \u201cBut until now we haven\u2019t questioned them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic has allowed us to rethink the way we work and inspired innovation and fresh thinking.
