Businesses and healthcare organisations too are increasingly making use of algorithms and automation. But how prepared are we for the next technological boom: the singularity?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The singularity is an idea that was alluded to back in 1965 when the British mathematician Irving defined an ultraintelligent machine as one that \u201ccan far surpass all the intellectual activities of any man however clever.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said this would be a technological revolution because, \u201cthe design of machines is one of these intellectual activities,\u201d and therefore, \u201cthe first ultraintelligent machine is the last invention that man need ever make.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How far along the path to singularity are we?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea that humans could create an AI that is able to create more intelligent AI can sound a little like science-fiction. But machine learning is everywhere now. And jobs that were thought to be too sophisticated for machines are becoming achievable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2020\/sep\/08\/robot-wrote-this-article-gpt-3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article in the Guardian is written entirely by an AI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/widerimage.reuters.com\/story\/ageing-japan-robots-role-in-future-of-elder-care\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a robot called Pepper is helping care for the elderly in Japan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Then there\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/widerimage.reuters.com\/story\/ageing-japan-robots-role-in-future-of-elder-care\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the robot companion named Mabu who has conversations with patients suffering from chronic illness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and gives health advice based upon how the patient answers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is quite a difference between current levels of machine learning and artificial <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">general <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intelligence (AGI)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is the required level of machine learning to achieve the singularity that Irving predicted, acceleration may occur faster than we imagine. This is because of the speed at which machines learn once they are given the right starting point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stuart J. Russell, a computer scientist and AI expert, says in an interview with Martin Ford that, \u201conce an AGI gets past kindergarten reading level, it will shoot beyond anything that any human being has ever done, and it will have a much bigger knowledge base than any human ever has.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/11\/27\/18114362\/ai-artificial-general-intelligence-when-achieved-martin-ford-book\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the top researchers predict this could occur anytime between 2029 and the year 2200<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the many forms of lesser AI that precede it will still have a huge impact on the way we live and work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause AI will have language programming it\u2019ll be able to simulate relationship,\u201d says Hilary Harvey, an Associate Partner at TPC UK. \u201cAnd eventually creative-thinking because it\u2019ll be able to learn. So leaders need to ask: \u201cIf there are so many human tasks that AI will be able to do, what are the skills we need to develop for the future?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The kind of leadership required<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although robots can already simulate a level of emotional intelligence, it is still a simulation. \u201cLeaders need to invest in the key leadership skills of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tpchealth.com\/how-are-you-listening\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">empathy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and creative thinking,\u201d says Hilary, \u201cof <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">building relationships<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leading others through complexity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 and developing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a coaching mindset and skills<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robots are still a way away from displaying authentic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vulnerability<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to inspire trust. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or interrogating their own unconscious biases<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to benefit the world around them. Or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">building meaning and purpose into their leadership systems<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In July last year <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TPC founder Charles Brook wrote<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cAs more responsibilities are passed into the hands of technology\u2026 the world will still need adventurers, dreamers and leaders with the tenacity to take on the status quo\u2026\u00a0 the emotional intelligence of the internally agile leader will not be replaceable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA smart machine will be always smarter than you are, a machine can never be wiser.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/jack-ma-wants-create-schools-teach-young-people-be-human-2019-10\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said Jack Ma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, co-founder of Alibaba. \u201dWhen smart people learn how to care about others, how to care about the future, how to be human, then a company becomes warm\u2026 [it has] soft power. Otherwise, you have a group of gangsters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The greatest need for leadership<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artificial Intelligence is \u201cthe conversation about the collective future of all of us, so it shouldn\u2019t be limited to AI researchers,\u201d says Max Tegmark, author of Life 3.0. \u201cLeaving aside speculations about superhuman AI, how would you like our tale to begin?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re facing such huge challenges globally that we need a high level of shared human interconnectivity to tackle them,\u201d says Hilary. \u201cWe need a sense that \u2018we\u2019re all in this together.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTech can be a part of the solution \u2013 but it needs to be for the good of all, not just the global north\u2026 we need to develop qualities that transcend culture.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unconscious mindsets hinder leaders from tackling the climate crisis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and unconscious biases are finding their way into machine learning [ <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">link to blog 3 of series<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ]. There is increasing urgency for leaders to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">access the higher self<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and to work together. [ <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could link to UN Global Compact post-event webinars once live<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as we look ahead to how AI will change the landscape of leadership, we need to invest in our future global leaders \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and we need to learn from them<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are initiatives set up to help us begin this journey, from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalshapers.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Shapers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyse-ngo.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WYSE foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supported by TPC Leadership<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future of leadership will ultimately become what we make it.
